In the music industry, career cripplers don’t get more hobbling than having New Kids on the Block on your resume. So learned former NKOTB-er Joey McIntyre, 26, who slammed up against his acid-washed past while shopping his just-released solo debut album, Stay the Same, to label execs last year. ”They’d say, ‘Thanks for coming and thanks for leaving,”’ laughs the Boston native. ”They’d say, ‘Oh, it’s fabulous, but…’ They’ve got no balls in this business.”

After New Kids imploded in 1994, McIntyre dabbled in acting; while in L.A. on a TV movie callback, McIntyre was persuaded by New Kid-turned-producer Donnie Wahlberg that his Top 40 days weren’t over. ”He said, you should do some pop music. I was like, ‘Hell no! I ain’t getting back in the ring,”’ says the singer. ”But Donnie could talk a dog off a chuck wagon. He could convince you of anything.”

Labels weren’t so easily swayed, however, even after McIntyre had 10 new songs to pitch. Rather than spiraling into a Behind the Music-style funk, the ex-teen idol released the CD on the Internet. Once a local station put the hyper-earnest title track into heavy rotation, previously indifferent labels came calling. McIntyre ultimately settled on his New Kids-era home, Columbia Records. ”Joey has become an artist,” says Will Botwin, Columbia’s general manager. ”That he had written and produced this whole project opened our eyes to how he’s grown creatively.”

Now McIntyre is enjoying what he calls ”the youngest comeback of all time,” with the upwardly mobile ”Stay the Same” at No. 21 on the Billboard singles chart. That may pale in the face of NKOTB’s multiplatinum glory, but McIntyre isn’t trying to top himself: ”It’s not, ‘You played Giants Stadium and now you’re playing a club.’ It’s, ‘Can you believe 700 people showed up to see me?’ I kind of got the monkey off my back.”
