When it comes to pop, too much isolation is usually a pretty good thing. Ergo, Idaho oddity Built to Spill make music with a weird naive excitement that recalls R.E.M. at their fresh-out-of-Athens finest. Courtesy of squirrelly, brat-voiced frontman Doug Martsch, quirky sing-alongs like ”Else” and ”Sidewalk” stare back at you with huge, Keane-painting eyes, defying you not to adore their kitschy charm. Maybe there’s hope for the so-called alternative scene after all. B
