The clever and sharply crafted verbal confections in Chabon’s prose offer promise that isn’t entirely fulfilled in Werewolves in Their Youth, a book of short fiction focused on domestic dysfunction and anomie. Chabon tends to defuse the mordant tension of his stories — an unhappy couple discovering the joy of rough sex in the master bedroom of a house they’re touring; a woman giving birth to her rapist’s child — by making sure that the frayed ends of these narratives get tied neatly and tenderly together in the end. It’s when he allows his characters to meander into more unpredictable situations — as he does in the title story — that Chabon is at his best. B
