John Carpenter’s latest shock-fest boasts a nifty new technique in vampire slaying: Storm their nest, shoot ’em with arrows connected to a winch, then drag them into daylight and burn them to a crisp. Unfortunately, that’s about as cool as John Carpenter’S Vampires gets. Careering through the desert Southwest, Carpenter overloads what could have been a lean, mean horror Western with a delirious Vatican-versus-vampires war for an empowering ancient cross. Not even a snarling James Woods, as the head ghoulbuster, can put a stake through its essential silliness. C
