Superman: Peace On Earth

Alex Ross has become a comic-book-fan favorite in recent years for his grandly old-fashioned art. Here, he and cowriter Paul Dini(of the fine Batman and Superman TV cartoon shows) retell the myth of Superman — Krypton baby raised by Earth parents to become Daily Planet reporter Clark Kent and Superman — while folding in a sentimental Christmas story about Superman’s concern for a starving runaway. Our hero speaks on world hunger to Congress in a scene that’s like Mr. Superman Goes to Washington, but the tale soon takes on a charged air as Superman redistributes surplus food around the globe and faces down a ”military despot.” Drawn and written with a restraint that never closes off heartfelt emotion, Superman: Peace on Earth is a lovely fable of idealism.
