Cross the Modern Jazz Quartet with smatterings of Gerry Mulligan, Steve Lacy, Raymond Scott, Frederic Chopin, and Thelonious Monk and you still might not come up with the winning sound of the Transparent Quartet, but you’d get an idea of how encompassing their influences are. This odd, engaging, drummer-less band mixes braininess with mirth on The Needless Kiss — the longtime hallmarks of their leader, saxophonist Philip Johnston. B
