Fear of Pop: Vol. I

The title of Ben Folds’ side project should tip you off that he’s taking a break from writing catchy singles. While these funky experiments and comedy skits miss the target about half the time, Folds hasn’t thrown up a brick, either. Even at its most forced (isn’t it time to retire William Shatner’s singing career? His vocals on ”In Love” prove the joke’s as hoary as a T.J. Hooker episode), Folds’ way with a melody makes sure Fear of Pop: Vol. I is never less than tuneful. C+
