Balls

Nanci Kincaid’s second novel exposes the rarefied world of Southern college football, where God and the coach are on equal footing. This tale of a young quarterback’s meteoric rise to head college coach tries to convince us that helmet-haired alpha males who wear bright Sansabelt slacks, polished slip-on shoes, and Old Spice aftershave are a powerfully attractive breed. Although the book — narrated by Coach Mac Gibbs’ wife, Dixie — actually succeeds on that level, the real interest here is in the coach’s complex (and often corrupt) relationships with his players and with the team boosters called ”the money people.” When the likable gridiron hero dominates the field, he carries Balls in for a touchdown.
