Any post-punk ESPN2 band can bash the crap out of its instruments, but the Offspring do it up right, with crafty yell-odies and winky lyrics. On their fifth album, they sound as volatile as ever, spewing riffs on complicated ’90s chicks (”She’s Got Issues”) and pathetic wannabes (”Pretty Fly [For a White Guy],” which could double as the Official Brian Austin Green Theme Song). A thrashed-out cover of fogey standard ”Feelings” epitomizes Americana‘s thrust: It’s apple pie in your face. B+
