Midnight Express

Midnight Express is the still-harrowing true story of American Billy Hayes, who stupidly tried to smuggle hashish out of Turkey and found himself facing 30 years in jail. An early success for director Alan Parker and scripter Oliver Stone, it’s joined by a seven-minute 1978 documentary featuring Hayes, I’m Healthy, I’m Alive, and I’m Free. The voice-over narration portentously reminds us that ”the American constitution doesn’t fit inside your passport.” Much more affecting is Hayes himself, seen on the movie set, who admits that the sight of actors playing Turkish guards really scared him.
