The alt-country supergroup Golden Smog — which boasts such sweethearts of the rodeo-rock scene as Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris and Marc Perlman — has roped in Big Star drummer Jody Stephens. Don’t know if he’s the reason, but Weird Tales is a major step forward from their spotty debut. From the Neil Young-ish ”If I Only Had a Car” to Tweedy’s Big Starry ”I Can’t Keep From Talking,” it’s full of country-pop gems. A-
