Dave Douglas may be the finest young jazz trumpeter you’re least likely to hear through mainstream channels — but worth the effort of checking out. A prized player in Tiny Bell Trio and Masada, among other groups, Douglas’ new one as a leader hums with a kind of burnished warmth and clarity, as well as a taste for gently pushing the envelope, alongside another young thinking lion, tenor saxist Chris Potter. With Magic Triangle, you sense a probing mind at work, commercial values be damned. B+
