The Con

Barbara (Rebecca De Mornay), a wisecracking hustler with a scary Mob debt, prepares to hitch and ditch a nearsighted naif from Mississippi (William H. Macy) who, unbeknownst to him, is going to inherit a cool $2 million. Macy, who cowrote the script for The Con, hasn’t done himself any favors with his one-dimensional Sling Blade-meets-Shine goon, but you gotta respect the audacity of a story line that has Barbara sticking around for the most wholesome of reasons. The artist of confidence here is De Mornay, who’s charming performance kept me watching to the end. C+
