The Skin I'm In

Anyone who’s heard Elvin Bishop’s singing voice knows why he asked Mickey Thomas to handle vocals on 1976’s ”Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” But even if his drunken-hillbilly warble isn’t the stuff of top 10 records, Bishop’s crisp, bluesy guitar playing, witty songwriting, and I’m-just-a-rube-who-loves-to-rock persona remain formidable assets. And the sheer, unpretentious joy he communicates on The Skin I’m In is enough to convince you he’s really a self-help guru in disguise. B+
