For anyone who worships at the altar of vintage high-energy Detroit rock, the late guitarist Fred ”Sonic” Smith’s underheralded post-MC5 band (which included Stooges drummer Scott Asheton) qualifies as a bona fide supergroup. Sweet Nothing, this newly unearthed 1978 concert recording — the only Sonic’s Rendezvous album extant — captures the feral-sounding quartet ripping and riffing its way through a collection of meat-and-potatoes rockers like a bar band possessed, making this a must-have for any self-respecting kick-out-the-jams mofo.
