Middlescence

Seven years after her band the Shams gave us the clever neo-country musings of their (lamentably) one-and-only album, Quilt, and two years after her swell solo debut, Diary of a Mod Housewife, guitarist Amy Rigby foists the slight charms of Middlescence. The album starts out promisingly enough — the first two tracks are winners — but too many songs with quips about parenthood (”What I Need”) or bargain hunting (”As Is”) suggest a homey sensibility that is less mod housewife and more Erma Bombeck.
