In retrospect, ”Wind Beneath My Wings” ruined Bette Midler: Before it, she specialized in big showstoppers that were schmaltzy and electrifyingly soulful (”The Rose,” ”Stay With Me”); nowadays, she mostly goes for the schmaltz. Too bad — technically, she’s singing better than ever, with an easygoing creaminess. One gem shines through on Bathhouse Betty: the mordant Ben Folds ballad ”Boxing.” B-
