The opening feedback heralds Hatfield’s renewed vigor after her messy major-label split. Hatfield’s smart, effects-free rock has the immediate thrill of a great garage band. Bed is filled with aggressive rockers about duplicitous lovers as well as acoustic musings on fame. And the infectious ”Swan Song” invokes John Mellencamp (”Dear Jack, I hate you, love Diane”) while wryly lobbing suicide threats. A-
