Spike Lee’s first documentary, which aired on HBO last February, about the 1963 Birmingham church bombing that killed four girls and became a defining moment in the civil rights movement, makes most of his recent dramas (He Got Game, Girl 6) look pretentious and hokey by comparison. Surprisingly, given Lee’s penchant for experimentation, there’s nothing remotely innovative about this sober, often intensely moving exploration of a community’s lingering grief and outrage — just the usual talking heads, stock footage, montages of stills, and such. But then, no visual pyrotechnics are necessary when your subject is this important, and the testimonials this achingly heartfelt. B+
