Hello, Dolly

And you thought Chucky was scary? Wait until you get a load of Arthur and his little sister D.W. These two $110 ”smart toys” are the follow-ups to last year’s hit Interactive Barney. Using Microsoft’s ActiMates system, they not only talk but also respond to signals from computers, television programs, and soon a PBS website.

The 21-inch-high dolls use sensors in their ears, hands, and feet to trigger a 4,000-word vocabulary of phrases like ”You know what? You rule!” They can sense whether the tot is watching the TV or the PC, and even guide him or her through software programs. No word yet on whether Arthur will remind kids to ask Mom for the new Microsoft game, or if D.W. will prod Dad to mail in that PBS pledge check.
