STARRING Vince Vaughn, Joaquin Phoenix, Janeane Garofalo, Scott Wilson

DIRECTED BY David Dobkin

Phoenix stars as a hapless midwestern small-town guy who accidentally befriends a serial killer and subsequently finds the FBI on his trail for the murders. ”It’s about an antihero,” says Dobkin. ”You know he’s not the guy you’d bet on, but you go with him because you almost want to take care of him.” Garofalo joins the gothic comedy, doing an ultra-dry turn as an investigating FBI agent and stealing a scene involving pot, a pizza delivery boy, and a vibrating bed. ”I originally passed because I thought there was a misogynist tone to the script,” says Garofalo, who prepped by watching ”a lot of cop TV” and visiting a shooting range. ”But I loved doing it. We were in Utah. It’s where I found my dog, Dew.” (Oct. 2)

THE LOWDOWN Strong cast, small budget, safe bet.
