STARRING THE VOICES OF Kevin Spacey, Dave Foley, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Denis Leary, David Hyde Pierce, Bonnie Hunt
DIRECTED BY John Lasseter
The pixar computer whizzes who made Toy Story return with a tale of an errant ant (Foley) who hires an out-of-work flea circus to battle an evil grasshopper named, natch, Hopper (Spacey). Suiting up for battle are male ladybug Leary, erudite walkingstick bug Pierce, and sexy black widow Hunt. ”The insect world’s a natural for computer animation,” says Lasseter, who spent four years on A Bug’s Life and used 12 times Toy Story‘s computer power. This Disney offering may need the muscle to compete with DreamWorks’ Antz (starring the voice of Woody Allen), which will beat it to theaters by more than a month. For Pierce, though, it’s been a learning experience: ”Now I see bugs and say, ‘Oh, that’s just like Denis Leary — smash!’ I have a greater sensitivity as I kill them.” (Nov. 20)
THE LOWDOWN Coming in second is never optimal, but if Armageddon can survive Deep Impact, Pixar can survive Woody.
