This week's Broadway sales numbers

Jerry Seinfeld’s 10-night gig on Broadway may be sold out, but he’s not the only big name on the boards. Producers of A View From the Bridge are hoping Tony Danza, who recently replaced best actor Tony winner Anthony LaPaglia, will give the 1955 Arthur Miller drama a much-needed box office boost. While Danza’s arrival was met with plenty of New York-style skepticism, he’s getting good buzz, and critic Clive Barnes praised his surprisingly ”fine performance.” Elsewhere, Toni Braxton takes over as Belle in Beauty and the Beast on Sept. 9, the same day Meshach Taylor (Designing Women) goes on stage as Lumiere the candlestick. Cabaret, shut down for the moment because of a Times Square construction mishap, will reopen — eventually — with Jennifer Jason Leigh (replacing Natasha Richardson as Sally Bowles) and Blair Brown. Chicago remains a hot spot, and its onstage population will soon include Ute Lemper (from the London cast), who replaces Bebe Neuwirth starting Sept. 8. And Alan Thicke, now performing in a Chicago road company, will join the Broadway cast for a limited engagement this fall. Alan Thicke? Hey, if Tony Danza can do it …
