The Gingerbread Man, racked by post-production tensions between PolyGram and maverick auteur Robert Altman, never played on more than 30 screens in its theatrical run, earning a paltry $1.5 million. But this latest install-ment of the John Grisham franchise finally found its audience — or, rather, the audience was finally able to find it — on video. At an average of 21 rentals per store, the Southern-lawyer-on-the-skids thriller proved nearly as profitable as the $45 million grossing John Grisham’s The Rainmaker, which rented 24 copies per store in its June debut.
