Book Review: 'All I Need to Know About Filmmaking I Learned From The Toxic Avenger'
It’s hard to know how much of this flagrantly puerile but very funny memoir by the maverick brain behind such cult classics as Bloodsucking Freaks, Pterodactyl Woman From Beverly Hills, and the Toxic Avenger series to take seriously. Troma Studios cofounder Kaufman, a Yale alum who describes his independent studio as ”the Cuisinart of cinema,” spews forth his disdain for Hollywood’s pack mentality and the fascism of certain video-chain stores while offering professional tips on everything from how to concoct foamy green vomit and crush a human head on screen (think cantaloupe) to the photogenic uses of red food dye and toilet paper. His anecdotes, often as tasteless as his flicks, may be raw, but, hey, you definitely won’t be bored. B
