Depeche Mode

For the Masses

Like most such albums, this tribute to Depeche Mode is deeply uneven. For every winner like Smashing Pumpkins’ erotically breathy guitar makeover of ”Never Let Me Down Again,” there are four duds, like Dishwalla?s take on ”Policy of Truth,” which sounds like INXS remixed by Trent Reznor. But what this compilation does prove is that the songs transcend even the most mediocre renderings and that the original versions were not just synth-pop pablum. The hooks, melodies, and lyrical obsessions remain genuinely haunting.
