Ricci gets first leading adult role
Christina Ricci gets adult with Johnny Depp
Christina Ricci has been cast as Johnny Depp’s love interest in Tim Burton’s “Sleepy Hollow,” a film based on Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Best known for playing the unflappable Wednesday in “The Addams Family” movies and currently tearing it up on the indie movie scene (“The Opposite of Sex,” “Buffalo 66”), the 18-year-old Ricci will play Katrina Van Tassel to Depp’s schoolteacher, Ichabod Crane.
The part is a significant one for Ricci, since it will be her first leading adult role in a major-studio movie. EW film critic Owen Gleiberman thinks the transition will be a smooth one: “She’s a terrific actress, with the wiliness and personality to move into adult roles effortlessly.” Though Ricci’s indie performances have been successful with critics (Gleiberman gave “Buffalo” an “A” and praised Ricci as “feisty” in “Sex”), a return to major-studio efforts might be a wise career move considering that both “Buffalo” and “Sex” have lacked an audience, grossing just $920,450 and $4.0 million, respectively.
