David Bowie and other celebrity-run Internet services

Not content with selling Bowie bonds to consumers and “Heroes” to Microsoft, David Bowie has announced that as of August he’ll be the first known rocker to also be a Net-service provider. That’s right: Sign up for davidbowie.com, and the Thin White Duke will handle your E-mail and Web access as well as post original music content and links to his favorite sites. If it catches on, here’s what some other pop-star ISPs might offer:

The Artist Unlimited cybersex and links to Bianca’s Smut Shack. But good luck finding a keyboard that lets you type your P.com address.

Marilyn Manson Marilyn treats users to his Mansonpatrol filtering software, which blocks access to all Christian and Spice Girls sites.

Sean “Puffy” Combs Puffdaddy.com comes with links to 80s.com, an oldies-CD-club membership, and a RealAudio filter that adds R&B percussion elements to any tune up to and including the “William Tell Overture.”

Celine Dion Celine.com offers a family-size jar of mayonnaise with every subscription. Unfortunately, you have to pound on the monitor to receive E-mail.
