On his second album (and first for a major label), this Seattle singer-songwriter filters his lovelorn tales through downcast, gritty songs that recall Neil Young at his most bummed out. Although his lyrics occasionally strain for emotional effect, Gerald Collier‘s sweet schoolboy voice and muscular arrangements bail him out more often than not. B+
