In addition to fending off its toughest competition yet, Titanic surpassed Star Wars as the all-time No. 1 domestic box office champ. Over in indieland, more records were broken: Good Will Hunting eked past Pulp Fiction to become Miramax’s biggest Stateside earner, and last week The Apostle leapfrogged Secrets & Lies as October’s most lucrative flick. And in case you were wondering, Carrot Top’s Chairman of the Board opened to a less-than-knee-slappin’ $180,000 in 196 theaters (averaging just $925 per screen) for 30th place.
