IRMA VEP Maggie Cheung, Jean-Pierre Leaud (1997, Fox Lorber, unrated, in French and English, $89.98, subtitled) Writer-director Olivier Assayas’ helter-skelter, flotsam/jetsam, hell-why-not-the-kitchen-sink? picture defies summary. The plot has Cheung, playing herself, in Paris to remake the famous French silent serial ”Les Vampires,” but that’s almost irrelevant. What this movie is really about is cinema as possibility; from its remarkable opening tracking shot to the animated images scratched directly onto film at its end, every breathtaking frame celebrates what movies can do. The antinarrative structure isn’t for everybody, but those who succumb will want to rewind immediately and watch it again. A
