She's So Lovely

SHE’S SO LOVELY Sean Penn, Robin Wright Penn, John Travolta (1997, Miramax, R, $103.99) You’d think director Nick Cassavetes would be his father’s best interpreter, but this cockeyed comedy about crazy love — from a John Cassavetes script — somehow misses the mark. It’s all strange behavior and stream-of-consciousness dialogue; John’s usual mad logic is missing. Still, Mr. and Mrs. Penn are exciting as a skid row couple with so much passion they truly don’t care about anything else. Their performances evoke the messy vitality of Cassavetes classics like A Woman Under the Influence — which helps explain why this film was so critically praised. But why rent the knockoff when you can have Dad’s originals? C+
