The Coen brothers’ Fargo follow-up The Big Lebowski may be set in a bowling alley, but don’t expect to hear this soundtrack album’s bizarre mix of songs at your local rock ‘n’ bowl. Oddities include obscure Bob Dylan and Captain Beefheart songs, a great Townes Van Zandt rendition of the Stones’ “Dead Flowers,” even opera, avant-classical, and lounge tracks. Such diversity can be jarring, but the only real gutter ball is a tepid new Elvis Costello tune called “My Mood Swings.” B
