Singing in the Comeback Choir

Singing in the Comeback Choir, the latest addition to the sistahs-are-us genre comes with a role tailor-made for Whitney Houston: Maxine, a former ghetto schoolteacher, executive producer of a TV talk show, wife of a successful entertainment lawyer, and granddaughter of Lindy, a once-famous jazz singer. Just as Maxine’s ratings nosedive and her network begins making cancellation noises, her grandmother’s caretaker quits, and Maxine must fly home to Philadelphia. On the street where she was raised she confronts not only the thugs who have taken over and her grandmother’s doubts and fears but also her own ambivalence about her marriage and career. You can almost see Whitney’s single shooting up the charts. B
