Hollow Reed

Made by Britain’s Channel Four Films (and given a brief theatrical release here), Hollow Reed proves that the independent production company can make issue-of-the-week melodramas as sludgy and self-important as our own networks’. Donovan (The Portrait of a Lady) is a gay divorced dad who suspects that his young son (Sam Bould) is being beaten by his ex-wife’s new boyfriend (Jason Flemyng); upon attempting to get custody, his relationship with his lover (BackBeat‘s Hart) gets raked over the coals in court. The dramatic deck is aggravatingly stacked against the smug yuppie mom played by Richardson. When she discovers the boyfriend’s abuse and still takes him back, her son throws in the towel — and so does the viewer. C-
