In Valerie Block’s Was It Something I Said?, an amusing but meandering tale of love between dating-impaired Manhattanites, condiment marketer Barry and corporate lawyer Justine meet scary: They are seatmates on a plane that almost crashes. Their near-death experience inspires a sexy, soulful relationship—until they notice how Justine’s workaholic, perfectionist personality clashes with Barry’s laid-back jokester self. Though the plot mirrors urban life all too well—job-related kvetches, Blockbuster nights, spats in restaurants—Block slyly chronicles the neuroses, annoyances, and chemistry that bind this unlikely, likable duo.
