Who in the universe would want to journey through more than eight hours of gassy, how-we-filmed-the-nebulae trivia included in this ”Special Edition” disc of Contact? Meant to show off DVD’s enormous storage capacity, it only demonstrates its capacity to accommodate mountains of filler. There’s little substance in two separate 150-minute audio commentaries (which can be switched on during the film) by director Robert Zemeckis (with producer Steve Starkey) and star Foster, who offers such non-insights as ”This was…a pretty thrilling moment.” Only the wry explications of F/X supervisor Ken Ralston on yet a third audio track have any spark.
