Any old action flick could slap Lynyrd Skynyrd?s ”Sweet Home Alabama” on the soundtrack to boost the energy, but only writer Scott Rosenberg (Beautiful Girls) would have a serial killer note the irony of ”a bunch of idiots dancing on a plane to a song made famous by a band that died in a plane crash.” Alas, a fistful of baroque quips and an eclectic cast are all that keep cliché-heavy Con Air‘s tale of a hijacked prison plane aloft. And how many shots of ex-con hero Nicolas Cage running in slow-mo from a fireball can one film contain? More than you could imagine, or muster the strength to fast-forward past. C+
