Movie Review: 'The Winner'
Las Vegas has rarely looked more vibrantly tacky than it does in this neo-noir comedy about an easy mark (D’Onofrio) on a winning streak and all the schemers who are after his money. But though the sidelights include a love scene in the Liberace Museum, director Alex Cox (Repo Man, Sid & Nancy) doesn’t make enough of the satirical possibilities of De Mornay’s jaded casino singer, Frank Whaley’s psycho hood, Madsen’s turn as D’Onofrio’s ex-con brother (who shows up with their murdered dad slung over his shoulder), or Thornton’s hitman with heart. A choice cast wasted. D
