Director Agnieszka Holland brings a feminist eye to this lively adaptation of Henry James’ masterpiece about a plain young woman (Jennifer Jason Leigh) who battles her domineering father (Albert Finney) over a suitor (Ben Chaplin) who may or may not love her for her inheritance. As played by Leigh in stylized fashion, this heiress is more ”damaged” than James suggests, more ”empowered” at the conclusion. B+
