After two years in prison, Rick James is back just in time for the soul-funk renaissance. The marginal Rapsody will get airplay not because of guests like Snoop Doggy Dogg, but because of the ’80s-style groove, bass pops, and pimp musings that were once James trademarks. Has his sound evolved? Not really. Is he still a superfreak? Yep. B-
