Filled with fine playing from Henderson, one of jazz’s premier tenor saxophonists, this self-consciously unconventional approach to Gershwin’s masterpiece redefines the term qualified success. Improvisational peaks aside, the rhythmic revampings can get corny, while guest spots from Chaka Khan and Sting are glaringly contrived. B-
