A Perfect Candidate

R.J. Cutler (who produced the 1993 campaign chronicle The War Room) and David Van Taylor shared the director’s berth for this funny, scary film about Iran-Contra hero/miscreant Oliver North’s 1994 Senate race. While following the smooth, sanctimonious Republican North and his bumbling Democratic opponent, incumbent Sen. Charles Robb, Cutler and Van Taylor interview journalists and strategists, mixing in candid footage and excerpts from local TV reports (which make Candidate perfect for the small screen). The spectacle is ridiculous, but it contains a sobering message about American political life: ”We provide daily entertainment,” admits Mark Goodin, North’s campaign strategist. ”What we are not providing is serious solutions to what’s going on in the country.” A
