We gave it a B+

This provocatively named L.A. band (led by a black guy named Stew) plays a wryly eccentric brand of white-bread pop laced with atmospheric keyboards, vibrant brass, and startling melodies. Reference points in Post Minstrel Syndrome include Love, the Beach Boys, XTC, and Jimmy Webb (whose ”MacArthur Park” is covered here). Pure-pop enthusiasts in search of exotic thrills need look no further than The Negro Problem. B+
