Imagine a Siberian Columbo, a bumbling but brilliant sleuth in the frozen reaches of the former Soviet Union, and you’ll have an idea what Nowek, the hero of the thriller Siberian Light by Robin White, is like. Add an ex-KGB officer, an American company that wants to exploit the area’s natural resources, a beautiful Russian American out to save the Siberian tiger, some questionable underworld characters, plus several murders to the mix, and you get an idea what Nowek must contend with in this tightly plotted read. It’s the print equivalent of a long, lazy evening with a bottle of Stolichnaya: At the end, it packs a powerful punch. B+
