The Music of Prohibition

As a beautifully remastered collection of 22 vintage jazz-oriented sides (six by Duke Ellington), The Music of ”Prohibition” is immensely satisfying. But as an honest representation of what Americans listened to during the Prohibition years (1920-33), it’s a failure. There are no recordings from the first five years or by such major musical figures of the era as Paul Whiteman. Four tracks postdate Prohibition altogether. C
