Mario Puzo's The Last Don

It’s a worthy cast for a TV mini-series but not for a sprawling Mafia saga based on a Puzo novel. Cut to 148 minutes from 259 for its release on tape, Mario Puzo’s The Last Don is never boring, but Graeme Clifford’s direction suffers scene by scene — a wedding, a Mob hit — versus memories of Coppola’s Godfather flicks. A Hollywood subplot is as hilariously high camp as anything out of Jackie Collins, with lang hamming it up as a martinet director. All she lacks are jodhpurs and a riding crop. Trimark has thoughtfully appended T&A scenes not broadcast — mostly of showgirls. No star was undressed in the making of this motion picture. B-
