Thanks for the great cover story on Mel and Julia’s new movie (#392, Aug. 15). It’s very refreshing to read my favorite magazine’s cover story and be able to learn about the movie without having the plot revealed. I went to see Conspiracy Theory the same day after reading about it, and I enjoyed the movie thoroughly. Keep up the good work!

I wholeheartedly agree with Jay Jennings’ assessment of the near-perfect mess Hollywood has made of basketball films (”Ball Boys”). But to omit Hoosiers, a far superior depiction of the game and its effects on its participants than White Men Can’t Jump, earns nothing less than a flagrant foul.

Why on earth did you have a man who freely admits he doesn’t care for most cartoons review Rugrats and South Park (”Salty Peanuts”)? Should we expect Jesse Helms to review Robert Mapplethorpe’s work in upcoming issues? And if Bruce Fretts does get his critic’s license revoked, please don’t let him become a scientist. Phil and Lil of Rugrats are not ”identical twin babies.” Identical twins are always the same sex.

JEWEL IN THE ROUGH
David Browne needs to bleed the ice water from his veins. Jewel Kilcher’s disarming honesty, demonstrated on Pieces of You and in her live performances, is breathtakingly refreshing. In an era when the art of songwriting is repeatedly body-slammed by technology, Jewel’s genuine emotion, humor, and rich characters are an oasis in a musical Mojave. I, for one, can’t wait to hear her grow ”wiser as well as older.”

I was extremely upset after reading the review of Pieces of You. Jewel is an original. I love the fact that Jewel’s songs tell a story. She is a wonderful songwriter, a great poet, and a damn good yodeler.

Five million people can’t be wrong. Jewel is a wonderful recording artist, and, unlike many other singers, you can relate to her songs. She has a sweet quality to her that makes her appealing to everyone. Her CD is full of songs from the heart that anyone who has experienced heartbreak can listen to and understand. Anyone who hates Jewel either hasn’t given her a chance or is seriously disturbed. I will stay a Jewel fan till the day I die.

Finally, someone agrees with me! Thank you David Browne for giving us an honest look at one of the most mediocre hit albums that I’ve heard in a long time. I saw Jewel on the Lilith tour, and honestly I was pleasantly surprised that she was able to pull off a 45-minute set without putting me to sleep. After the concert I gave the album a second try, but I’m sorry, Jewel, this is one guy you weren’t meant for!
