From their first album, Primus were a band in decline. Propelled by frontman Les Claypool’s explosive bass lines (and oblique wordplay), Primus’ early efforts were, if nothing else, satisfyingly eclectic. But with Brown Album, their seventh album, they cross that thin line between novel and novelty — Claypool may be an ace of bass but his songs remain the same. C
