No Way Back

Could’ve skipped the video release of No Way Back and gone straight to the videogame with this glossy, fast-paced, made-for-cable thriller, which stars Russell Crowe as a testy FBI agent forced to salvage his career when a sting op goes awry. At the arcade the slim story, cardboard characters, and cartoon violence involving skinheads, Japanese business lords, feds, and Mob kingpins would have made for hours of fun. Eisushi Toyokawa’s intense, low-key bad guy counterpoints Crowe’s type A antics; Michael Lerner’s Mob don is scary because he’s so Seinfeld Newmanesque, and Helen Slater plays a birdbrained stewardess for comic (?) relief.
